After our darkest of nights, Manchester is today walking up to the most difficult of dawns. It is hard to believe what has happened here in the last few hours and to put into words the shock, anger and hurt that we feel today. These children, young people and their families, that those responsible, chose to terrorise and kill.
Manchester Arena Attack Latest: 22 people died and 59 injured, the latest news reports. The police confirmed the attacker has died at the scene, who blew himself with an IED.
This was an evil act.
Our first thoughts are with the families of those killed and injured, we will do whatever we can to support them.
We are grieving today, but we are strong. Today, it will be business as usual, as far as possible, in our great city.
These were children, young people and their families, I want to thank the hundreds of police, fire and ambulance staff, who worked through the night in the most difficult circumstances imaginable.
We have had messages of support from cities around the country, and across the world and we thank them for that.
But lastly, I want to thank the people of Manchester. Even in the minutes after the attack, they opened their doors, to strangers and drove them away from danger.
They gave the best possible, immediate response to those, who seek to divide us.
And it will be that spirit of Manchester that will prevail, and hold us together.
A warning from Greater Manchester police:
Greater Manchester police have been saying, the importance of making sure people are sharing a lot of information on social media, making sure it is accurate.
We all know, we talk about the incident, there has been, a lot of fake news, and people are shamefully talking about made up relatives they are missing from last night, in searches for re-tweets on social media and things like that.
At times like this, you see the good side of the social media platform, but also the negative side, so be aware of what is out there and what you are trying to find information on people they cannot contact from last night.
